From 31 October to 11 November 2026, the shopping centre’s centre court will gradually transform into a sea of red poppies, as residents of all ages are invited to plant a handcrafted poppy, a personal tribute to Australia’s servicemen and women.

Chris Garnaut of Fawkner Property Group said there was “something incredibly powerful about a community coming together for a shared purpose”.

“For some, planting a poppy will honour someone they loved. For others, it may be the beginning of understanding a sacrifice made long before they were born,” he said.

“We hope everyone who visits feels a sense of connection and gratitude as we remember those who have served.”

HMAS Cairns commanding officer Commander Andrew Thorpe said as a navy city with a proud Defence heritage, Cairns had a strong connection to those who had served.

“Remembrance events provide an important opportunity for our community to come together and honour the service and sacrifice of Australians who have served our nation in war, conflict and peace operations,” he said. “We encourage the Cairns community to join us in paying their respects and ensuring this legacy is remembered by future generations.”

Cairns RSL Sub Branch president Nathan Shingles said behind every name was a story, a family and a sacrifice that should never be forgotten.

“The field of remembrance gives our community a special opportunity to come together, share those stories across generations and ensure that their service and sacrifice continues to be remembered” he said.

Individuals, families, schools, veterans and local organisations are invited to contribute and help grow the field of remembrance at the shopping centre.
