Pool league chalks up wins

SPORT has been a regular feature of the ‘Goss’ over the last few years, but never have I covered pool.

This is surprising, as I am just starting to learn how popular the game is, particularly in the Douglas Shire.

The annual Port Douglas pool competition final was recently held at the Barrier Reef Tavern, in Four Mile, Port Douglas.

This year’s competition, saw the home team ‘Tav Rats’, reach the A grade final for the first time in 10 years.

After a full day of close and competitive games, the ‘Mossman 2’ team were crowned the eventual winners.

In the B grade, ‘Rattle 2’ side won the day, defeating the ‘Tavern 1’ team.

The league was originally started by Broz Jurie and his wife Dot in 1989 and over the last 36 years there have been multiple venues which include the original location at the Beach Shack, the Tin Shed, Central Hotel, Court House and Port Douglas Yacht Club. In more recent years, the Barrier Reef Tavern has hosted the final.

“The original committee had five members and I was the president for a number of years,” said current president Broz Jurie.

“The committee dropped to two people, which wasn’t enough, so I have stepped in for one year to help,” he said.

“We now have four committee members and things have improved.”

The competition members see the league as a competitive but social group of locals who all share a love of playing pool.

“It’s a social thing,” Mr Jurie said. Some of the leagues players, however, also play on a regional level.

Organisers are encouraging new teams to get involved.

“We are always open to new teams getting involved when a venue, with a pool table, is able to accommodate our Monday night pool competition,” said league treasurer Kylie Forrest.

“We are looking to expand our teams and venues, having had six teams last year,” she said.

Details of events and how new teams can get involved can be found via the ‘Port Douglas Pool Comp’ Facebook Group.

I’m off to chalk my cue, so for now it’s Gazza signing out.
