THE 73rd Annual Mossman Show was held at the showgrounds last weekend, July 20 and 21.

Organised by the not-for-profit Mossman and District Show Society, it was suggested, prior to the event, that this may well be the biggest show since the show’s inception in 1952 and from the overall feedback, it certainly didn’t fail in terms of that promise.

As in the past, the two-day event was the perfect celebration of the region’s agricultural industry, showcasing local exhibits and providing family-friendly entertainment. The weather fortunately turned out to be perfect for the long weekend, with a mixture of blue skies, some cloud and temperatures above average for this time of year.

As always, the Mossman Show brought out a competitive edge with activities that included the popular wood chopping, dog jumping, equestrian events, cooking, plus arts and crafts competitions.

As with any traditional agricultural show, a selection of interesting livestock provided great viewing and entertainment, with each exhibit aiming to achieve the coveted prize of ‘best in show’.

Once again regular favourites like the reptile show provided both a fascinating and educational experience with both locals and visitors, all keen to learn a little more about the beautiful but often dangerous creatures of this land.

Visitors also enjoyed the more traditional exhibits like the poultry and cattle, plus the usual chance to view some of the latest farming equipment close up and personal.

The relatively new NQ Tractor Pulling, now in its second year at the Mossman Show, proved to be a big hit with a selection of vintage tractors in action.

New this year was ‘Airtime FMX’, which has been born from the previously highly successful ShowTime FMX Team, with team rider Brad Burch taking over the reins and launching this addition.

With the new name, comes a new era, delivering captivating and jaw dropping live freestyle motocross entertainment popular at major events Australia-wide.

This year the show welcomed back Ranger Nick, a bush cook guru and weaver of yarns and poetry. He has been demonstrating camp oven and bush cooking skills professionally since 2010, travelling the country and overseas.

Noah’s Thoroughbred Racing Pigs also returned, providing enjoyment for all ages and raising some funds for Wonga Beach State School. From the bugle race call, through the obstacles, to the last snout in the finishing trough, crowds were once again cheering their preferred pig to the end.

Other popular events over the holiday weekend included dog show jumping, Melville’s Animal Farm, the Resta Reptile Show, the traditional fun fair, food stalls and a massive fireworks display as a grand finale.

Together with traditional show food, music was very much part of the weekend, with local entertainment, including the Mossman High School Band, plus other live music to get the crowd moving on Sunday night.

The show concluded with a massive fireworks display on Monday evening, the perfect end to a superb weekend in the Douglas Shire.

I’m off to work on my wood chopping skills, so for now it’s Gazza signing out.
