Peace mission by schoolgirl

A YEAR 5 student from Trinity Anglican School (TAS) at Kewarra Beach is inviting Far Northerners to take part in a simple but powerful idea: completing the sentence “Peace is…” as part of a global project leading up to UNESCO’s World Day of Living Together in Peace on Thursday 14 May.

Inspired by a desire to bring people together through shared values of kindness, respect and understanding, Olivia Brands has launched the Global Kids for Peace project, encouraging students, schools, families and individuals to reflect on what peace means to them and share their message online.

The initiative invites participants to write their own “Peace is…” statement on a poster and upload it to a dedicated global platform, creating a collective expression of peace from communities around the world.

The project has a global goal of reaching 50,000 schools and individuals by 14 May, aligning with UNESCO’s World Day of Living Together in Peace.

Olivia said the project was about giving young people a voice and creating a sense of connection across cultures.

“I think the world could do with a bit more peace and kindness,” she said.

“Peace can be as simple as being kind, being a good friend and understanding each other,” Olivia said.

Supported by TAS and aligned with the school’s ‘Round square values of internationalism and service’, the project is being shared across the school community and beyond, with a focus on building strong local participation.

TAS Year 5 teacher and round square coordinator Claire Bossingham said the initiative reflected the power of student-led ideas to create meaningful impact.

“This is a wonderful example of a young person taking initiative and encouraging others to think about how we connect and support one another,” Ms Bossingham said.

“It’s a simple idea, but one that has the potential to resonate widely.”
