Old-style pharmacy opens
A NEW community-focused pharmacy has opened in central Gordonvale, bringing pharmaceutical services back to the town centre with a focus on personalised care.
Gordonvale Community Pharmacy, in Gordon Street opposite Norman Park, now provides prescription dispensing, professional counselling, vaccinations, medication reviews, and compounding tailored medications for customers.
Professional care pharmacist Noha Badawy said the response from residents since opening had been overwhelmingly positive.
“People here are very friendly and they’re very welcoming – and they are so happy that we’re here,” she said.
“Many of them just come in just to greet us and tell us how happy they are that we’re here.”
Ms Badawy said the pharmacy had filled a gap for residents living on that side of Gordonvale.
“Many of them don’t have cars, especially the old people, and they have difficulty with transportation to go to the other pharmacy. So that’s why they were so happy when we opened,” she said.
The pharmacy team includes pharmacy assistants Ryker Kennedy, Laura and Kiki (surnames withheld), who all have strong connections to the local community. Kiki is a second-year nursing student, while Mr Kennedy and Laura will study pharmacy at James Cook University.
Mr Kennedy, who grew up with family ties to Gordonvale, said working at the new pharmacy had been rewarding.
“I love it here. I was born in Cairns and always come to Gordonvale. Family all live here, and it’s such a lovely area,” he said.
It is described as a “traditional pharmacy”.
