Marine engineer and shipbuilder Birdon is working to bring together structural, electrical, hydraulic and mechanical engineering to deliver a modern, reliable ferry for the community.

Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said council was pleased to see the project moving forward.

“We’re excited to see the new ferry (above) design taking shape and to have this important project underway,” she said.

Birdon’s design team is drawing on extensive maritime engineering experience to ensure the new ferry delivers improved service, enhanced durability and better passenger experience for locals and visitors.

“Our team is excited to progress the design of the new Daintree River ferry, a vessel that plays such an important role in connecting the Douglas Shire community,” said Birdon assets and services general manager Sarah Yuen.

To support faster loading and unloading of the new ferry, council is upgrading the approach roads and ramps on both sides of the Daintree River. Work is due to begin after the wet season.

Cr Scomazzon said members of the community reference group had also been briefed on the timing and scope of the upcoming roadworks.

“It’s important we take our community along the journey for a project of this scale,” she said.

“The new ferry and associated infrastructure will have a real impact on residents and tourists north of the river and we’re committed to keeping everyone informed as the work progresses.”
