New era for guesthouse
A MELBOURNE family is preparing to swap the big smoke for the laidback rainforest vibes of Babinda after buying a much-loved heritage guesthouse in the small town.
Glenn Harris and Julie Martin have taken over the Babinda Quarters, which was built in 1953 as accommodation for nurses at Babinda Hospital.
After falling in love with Far North Queensland’s spectacular natural environment, welcoming communities and relaxed lifestyle, the Melbourne family has set its sights on making Babinda their future home.
When the opportunity to buy Babinda Quarters arose, they knew they had found, not only a family business, but also a place to put down roots and become part of the Babinda community.
With a shared passion for art, architecture and nature, the family immediately connected with the property’s distinctive art deco character and its rich history.
Ms Martin said her family felt privileged to become the next custodians of Babinda Quarters, recognising the remarkable legacy created by Margaret “Maggie” Nelson and continued by her daughter Kim Marsden. “We want to honour the remarkable legacy that Kim and her mum, Maggie, built over many years,” she said.
“Their warmth, generosity and commitment to welcoming visitors have created something truly unique – and we hope to preserve that spirit while thoughtfully building on it for future generations.”
Over time, the family hopes to develop a thriving produce garden filled with tropical fruit, herbs and seasonal vegetables, embracing a true farm-to-table philosophy.
“We’d love to inspire guests and the local community to appreciate seasonal eating, support local growers and learn more about sustainable gardening and food production,” Ms Martin said.
“We also hope to create more family-friendly outdoor spaces where children can play and families can relax and enjoy the beautiful tropical surroundings,” she said.
Beyond Babinda Quarters, the couple are looking forward to becoming active members of the community, supporting local businesses and contributing wherever they can.
Until then, the family will continue to make regular visits to Babinda while gradually preparing for the next chapter of life in Far North Queensland.
In the meantime, it is business-as-usual at Babinda Quarters, which continues to welcome travellers, families and longer-stay guests across its nine guest rooms, shared facilities and tropical garden setting.
