Australian author Susannah Glenn will visit Smithfield Library on Monday 19 October to discuss her new crime novel, ‘Without a Trace’.

A former journalist and one-time Far North Queensland local, Ms Glenn will speak about her latest book, her writing process and what goes into crafting a thriller.

Cairns Bridge Club members will also introduce newcomers to one of the world’s most popular card games, with sessions starting on 19 October and running every Monday for participants.

The relaxed, non-competitive sessions will teach participants the basics of bridge, with experienced players available to provide guidance. No partner or prior experience is required.

Programs for younger residents are also returning, with regular First 5 Forever activities resuming on Tuesday 6 October. The program is for children aged 0–5 and includes storytime, songs, rhymes and play to help build early literacy skills.

October also marks Queensland Seniors Month, with Cairns Libraries offering a month-long program of free events. Activities include wellness experiences, creative workshops, card games and other social activities.

At City Library, visitors will have access to an additional self-service kiosk for computers and printing. The installation marks the start of a broader technology upgrade program planned across all library branches.

Visitors to City Library should also be aware of temporary access changes from 12 to 16 October while solar panel removal works are underway. The library car park will be closed and the drive-through returns chute will be unavailable. The library will remain open and services, programs and facilities will continue as normal.

Other activities in October include the monthly Recipe Swap and Cookbook Club, digital comics and graphic novels available to library members, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander family history research assistance, coloured pencil drawing activities and after-school sessions.

The range of programs will continue across Cairns Libraries throughout October, offering activities for children, families, seniors and other community members.
