National records no problem for Gardi

CAIRNS-based personal trainer Mike Gardi has once again set a new national record in powerlifting, just months after his previous record in July.

He continued his streak of excellence in the masters division, capping off another successful competition season.

“It’s all about working hard and training consistently,” Mr Gardi said.

“After my last win, I had 11 weeks to prepare for this one, and it all came together.”

Mr Gardi splits his time between coaching at one of Cairns’ leading powerlifting gyms, Gold’s Gym and helping his students reach their personal bests.

“Seeing my students achieve their own records is even more rewarding than breaking my own,” he said.

For Mr Gardi, weightlifting is as much about mental strength as physical prowess.

“Every morning, I train myself and my clients, motivating them and keeping them on track,” he said.

“It keeps me motivated too, without even realising it.”

He also credits the Cairns and North Queensland community for supporting his journey.

“Across powerlifting competitions, no matter the gym or team, there’s always encouragement and support. It really makes a difference.”

Mr Gardi is already preparing for his next competition in March, with new clients training alongside him for the upcoming season.
