Mulgrave cruises to easy eight-wicket victory
ROUND two of the Far North Queensland cricket competition delivered a mix of dominant performances, close finishes and plenty of runs, as teams continued to settle into the early stages of the season.
Mulgrave enjoyed a comfortable outing against Rovers, cruising to an eight-wicket victory. The result sees Mulgrave continue to build momentum early in the campaign after producing a strong all-round performance to comfortably account for their opponents.
The Bhutanese Rovers also recorded a convincing win, defeating Norths by nine wickets. The one-sided contest saw the Bhutanese Rovers chase down their target with plenty to spare, making an early statement as the competition continues to take shape.
In the Tablelands clash, Mareeba emerged victorious over Atherton, securing a four-wicket win. The result adds another important victory to Mareeba’s campaign, while Atherton will now look to regroup as the season progresses.
The closest contest of the round came between the Rovers’ third side and Mulgrave’s second team, with just one run separating the two sides at the final whistle. Rovers 3rd held their nerve to claim a dramatic one-run victory in a match that went down to the wire.
There was another Mulgrave battle elsewhere in the round, with Mulgrave Red claiming bragging rights over Mulgrave Cranes. Red produced a solid performance to secure a five-wicket victory and continue their strong start to the season.
For Douglas, however, the opening rounds have proven challenging. The side suffered a heavy 141-run defeat against Barron, with Barron putting together a commanding performance to claim a comprehensive victory.
With several sides already showing strong early-season form, the competition is beginning to develop an intriguing shape. Comfortable wins for Mulgrave, Bhutanese Rovers and Barron were balanced by the tight one-run thriller between Rovers third and Mulgrave second. As teams continue to find their rhythm, the coming rounds will provide a clearer picture of which clubs can maintain their early momentum and challenge for the top positions as the season develops.
