Mozzie plan updated
A NEW management plan to better control mosquito populations has been adopted by Cairns Regional Council.
A council spokesman said mosquitoes remained a seasonal challenge across Far North Queensland.
“From 2021 to 2024, (the) council received 836 mosquito-related complaints, highlighting the need for ongoing, effective management,” he said.
“The new mosquito management plan employs a comprehensive approach, combining chemical, biological and physical treatments, including fogging, ground and aerial applications, to keep mosquito numbers in check.
“(The) council is dedicated to tackling the health risks posed by mosquito-borne illnesses such as Dengue Fever and Ross River Virus (RRV).”
According to the Queensland Government’s Notifiable Diseases Report, the Cairns and Hinterland region continues to record dozens of mosquito-borne disease cases, particularly RRV and dengue.
“This plan adapts to the region’s changing seasonal and environmental conditions, ensuring the most effective control measures year-round,” the spokesman said.
