More stars sign up for T20 Cairns Gold Clash
FORMER Australian cricket stars Darren Lehmann and Callum Ferguson have joined the line-up for the inaugural T20 Cairns Gold Clash, in association with Hot Spring, at Cazalys Stadium.
The pair will represent Team Cricket against Team Footy at the cross-code T20 cricket event in Cairns on Sunday 22 November.
Lehmann and Ferguson join a Team Cricket line-up featuring West Indian legend Brian Lara, Australian cricket greats Usman Khawaja, Matthew Hayden and Michael Hussey, and tennis grand slam champion Ash Barty.
Team Footy will include NRL stars Johnathan Thurston and Sam Burgess, alongside AFL players Joel Selwood, Dale Thomas, Isaac Smith and Kate McCarthy, with further players to be announced.
Lehmann played 27 Tests and 117 ODIs for Australia, including scoring the winning runs in the 1999 World Cup final. He later coached Australia to a 5-0 Ashes whitewash and the 2015 World Cup title.
“Playing cricket in Cairns sounds like the perfect way to spend a Sunday night in November,” Lehmann said.
“The Gold Clash concept is so exciting and there are already so many big names signed on to play – it’s a must watch,” he said. “I’m looking forward to playing with Brian Lara on Team Cricket, rather than against him.”
Ferguson represented Australia in test, ODI and T20I cricket during a career that also spanned 16 years of first-class cricket for South Australia. He captained the Sydney Thunder in the BBL and is now a sports broadcaster and cricket commentator.
“I’m pumped to be part of the first ever Gold Clash,” Ferguson said. “There’s an amazing line up already and for Team Cricket there is going to be plenty of pride on the line.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how the guys in Team Footy go with the bat and white ball too.”
The T20 Cairns Gold Clash will begin at 6pm AEST at Cazalys Stadium, with Team Footy and Team Cricket competing for the inaugural trophy.
Tickets are on sale at goldclash.com.au, with the event supported by the Queensland Government via Tourism and Events Queensland, Cairns Regional Council and Tourism Tropical North Queensland.
