Model callout for CIAF
Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) is currently seeking expressions of interest (EOI) from Indigenous models – be it first time or experienced - to present the curated and culturally imbued Queensland-based designer collections for this year’s fashion performance OF SPIRIT & STORY – Sacred Sites & Places of Significance.

Curated by award-winning artist Clinton Naina and choreographed by professional dancer, model, choreographer and mentor, Hans Ahwang, OF SPIRIT & STORY is destined to be one of the shining highlights at this year’s CIAF – returning bigger and better in 2020 over six days from Tuesday 17 to Sunday 22 August 2021.
OF SPIRIT & STORY will be performed across three shows on Thursday 19 and Friday 20 August at Tanks Arts Centre.
Each 90-minute performance will explore the import and meaning of ancient sacred sites and places of significance from creation along with the preservation of Country and its vast resources.
CIAF’s Artistic Director Janina Harding said this year’s fashion event encompasses a powerful narrative spanning sustainable fashion, wearable art and design within a creative fusion of contemporary and traditional music and dance.
“This performance has never been about fashion for fashion’s sake; the message is always significant, if not more so than the garments on show,” Ms Harding said.
The curators are seeking Indigenous individuals who are interested in pushing the boundaries of fashion, art and culture in the 2021 interpretation that will show a new way of celebrating culture and stories.
In addition to their curatorial duties, the creative team will be working with successful applicants to ensure their talent is showcased at the highest level.
According to Naina and Ahwang, they are looking for people whose uniqueness will highlight contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander fine art with high end fashion through the act of adornment, presentation, performance and movement within two innovative and professional catwalk shows.
“We invite anyone, and everyone interested in exploring the fashion industry through modelling and performance that incorporates movement, song and dance and culture into a stunning and engaging presentation,” Mr Naina said.
CIAF’s model EOI is open to individuals 18 years and over until Friday 25 June 2021. EOI applications must be submitted online via www.CIAF.com.au
