Mixed results on pitches

IT WAS a mixed weekend for Cricket Far North (CFN) representative teams, with strong performances from the women’s and second XI men’s sides offset by tough losses for the open men’s team.

CFN coordinator Daniel Freebody said the CFN open men’s team “didn’t do the best” after losing both of their matches. However, he praised the depth shown across the rest of the representative squads.

“Our second 11 did really well and our ladies did really well,” he said.

The CFN second XI men’s side endured a narrow loss on Saturday by just two runs, before bouncing back on Sunday to claim victory in the final over. Standout performances included Archie Ferguson, who made 123, while Sam Musgrave and Ryan McGrath both took five-wicket hauls.

The CFN open women’s team also impressed, winning two out of three matches. Their only defeat came in the final over of a closely contested match. Both the second XI men’s and open women’s teams finished second on their respective ladders.

Indi Palmer scored a half-century for the women’s side, while Ashley McPherson claimed a hat-trick. “They did really well, really proud,” Mr Freebody said. “Every single person in the team contributed over the three games – it was very much a team effort.”

Mr Freebody said the results reflected strong development across the ranks and growing momentum in women’s cricket.
