Meiia bids city farewell
FOR local soul-pop-funk artist Meiia (formerly known as Grace Jones), Cairns has been the heart of her musical journey.

Before relocating to Brisbane later this year, she will play her final headline show at Crate59 on September 9, marking both a farewell and the launch of her third single, ‘Keep It Together’.
Reflecting on her time in Far North Queensland, Meiia said playing with Australian icons The Cat Empire was a highlight.
“Definitely opening for Cat Empire was an absolutely crazy experience. The audience was so lovely and the show was so cool,” she said.
“We also supported them a couple of years ago, which was really special. But, honestly, getting to perform my own original sets at venues like Elixir Music House has probably shaped me the most.”
Her latest single ‘Boys Like You’ has gained national attention with rotation on Triple J Unearthed and airplay on Triple J.
She said that the inspiration came from personal experience.
“It was about being treated not very well by boys,” she laughed.
“But musically, it was me really starting to find my sound, experimenting with soul, funk and pop with my producer Emory. The track came together quickly and was so much fun to make.”
The farewell gig promises to be a high-energy showcase, backed by her seasoned band featuring Enzo Russo (bass), Michael Rivett (keys/sax), Eddie Valentine (guitar) and Jono Barbagallo (drums).
“It’s going to be a cool set with a lot of original music I haven’t released yet. It’ll be a special experience for me too,” she said.
Local artist Vid will join her as a support act after Chris Whitchurch had to withdraw due to illness.
Looking ahead to Brisbane, Meiia is excited to dive into a bigger scene.
“I’m just super excited to play cool shows, meet heaps of people and really get into the music community in Brizzy,” she said.
Known for her magnetic stage presence, she says performing with energy comes naturally.
“It’s just the way I like to be on stage. Staying on top of vocal health helps, but honestly, it just happens organically.”
As for the future, Meiia hopes to release an EP in 2026.
“I’d love to dive deeper into funk and soul, write upbeat, high-energy tracks and keep experimenting with my sound.”
Her Crate59 show will be all-ages, with tickets available online and at the door.
