MEIIA back home for fest
CAIRNS musician Grace Jones, performing under the persona MEIIA, will return home this week for Cairns Festival following the release of her new single, ‘Fix It Anyway’.
MEIIA will perform at Tank 5 on Saturday night at 7.15pm, supporting The Steele Syndicate.
Ms Jones moved to Brisbane late last year and said the change had given her new perspectives on music and life.
“The move has definitely changed me in so, so many ways. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some incredible musicians and friends that I admire heaps and have also learnt so much from over the last year,” she said.
“It’s given me a whole new perspective on not only making music but also just experiencing life as an adult for the first time too.”
Her new single, Fix It Anyway, was released on 20 August and was inspired by her concerns about the use of generative AI in the creative industries.
“I wrote this song out of frustration about the use of generative AI in music and art,” she said.
“I know it’s a controversial topic for some, but I just don’t see a world where an AI-generated song is as meaningful and as passionate as anything that could come from a human.”
Ms Jones said that performing as MEIIA gave her greater freedom to develop a creative identity separate from her own.
“MEIIA can be whatever I want, and that makes me feel very free,” she said.
Ms Jones is working on her debut EP with producer Sam Woods, and more tracks are expected to be shared over the next couple of months.
“It feels really cool. I was super excited when Cairns Fest reached out about this gig.
“I love Cairns and am very grateful for everything I learnt growing up there and for working with the amazing musicians and mentors I got to work with,” she said.
“It’s a very special place to me.”
