The latest generation of its top selling CX-5 and its first proper electric vehicle – the Mazda6e – were shown to 100 special guests at the Salt House, Cairns Marina.

Cairns Mazda dealer-principal Scott King said the vehicles were now on sale at their Newell St showroom.

“Today, I want to talk about how Mazda is redefining what it means to drive,” he told the gathering.

“For years, Mazda has promised us ‘zoom-zoom’ that pure, tactile joy of being connected to the road.

“Now, look at the all-new Mazda CX-5. It is the evolution of a legend.

“Fully redesigned, it’s longer and wider, turning its classic sporty silhouette into a much more spacious, premium family SUV.

“Inside, a massive 15.6-inch screen takes centre stage and standard all-wheel drive means it handles beautifully, no matter the weather.

“It is everything we love about the CX-5, only bigger, smarter and more refined.

“But if you want to see exactly where the future is heading, look right next to it: the all-new, all-electric Mazda 6e.

“This isn’t just an EV. It’s Mazda’s first mainstream electric vehicle and it was just recognised as the 2026 world car design of the year.

“It features a stunning, low, coupe-like silhouette, frameless doors and a gorgeous minimalist cabin inspired by the Japanese concept of ‘ma’ – the beauty of empty space.

“With a massive 560km range and standard rear-wheel drive, it proves that going electric doesn’t mean giving up the thrill of the drive.

“Whether you love the rugged, everyday capability of the CX-5 or want to leap into the gorgeous, electrified future with the 6e, Mazda has proven once again that they design cars for people who truly love to drive.”

All CX-5s come with all-wheel drive and a 132kW 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine in five specifications: Pure, Evolve, Touring, GT SP and Akera, starting from $39,990 drive away for the Pure, rising to $54,990 for the Akera.

Next year hybrid versions are expected to be added to the mix.

There are just two models in the 6e range: a $49,990 GT and a $62,990 Atenza, both rear-wheel drive and with a 190kW electric motor. It has a range of up to 560km.
