On Friday, January 5, four-month-old pup Dotti was run over by a car in Wujal Wujal after falling asleep under the vehicle.

Forced to evacuate their home during the danger of Cyclone Jasper, her owner still has not been able to return home.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr initiated a helicopter rescue mission after receiving a distress call for help from Wujal Wujal’s chief executive Kiley Hanslow after finding Dotti had suffered a severe fracture to her leg.

On Wednesday last week, Port Douglas Vets were able to perform surgery on Dotti, inserting a rod and pins to support her broken leg paid for by Paws and Claws Port Douglas through community donations.

Currently in the care of the Paws and Claws, Dotti is expected to undergo several months of rest before returning to her owner and community.

Cr Kerr said it was “testament to our community’s generosity that Dotti’s $6000 medical bill will be covered by donations”.
