Making classification easier for region’s para-swimmers
FAR North Queensland swimmers will have greater access to competitive pathways after confirmation that a regional classification event will go ahead in August.

Swimming Australia has locked in classification dates for 1-2 August, marking a significant step for local athletes seeking to compete in para-swimming without the need to travel interstate.
The move is expected to remove a major barrier for families in the region, where travel to southern cities such as Melbourne has often been too difficult or costly.
Cairns-based swimmer Sophie (surname withheld), who was reclassified last year in Cairns, is among those to benefit from improved local access.
Her mother Jeanette said bringing classification to FNQ would make a difference for many swimmers.
Without regional classification opportunities, many local athletes would miss out on competing due to the financial and logistical challenges of travelling.
Sophie said having classification available locally would make a significant difference for athletes like her.
“I like getting classified up here instead of going to the Gold Coast or going anywhere else. It’s really frustrating to go down there,” she said.
“And yeah, that’s the annoying bit – the travel to get there.”
Sophie has become a prominent example of inclusion in sport through her involvement with FNQ Connect, where she has featured in corporate videos highlighting participation and accessibility.
FNQ Connect director Eleanor Loudon said the announcement reflected the importance of listening to people with lived experience.
“Outcomes are always better when you work with and listen to the people with lived experience of disability.
“This is a great example of Swimming Australia listening and responding perfectly. What a fantastic opportunity for Far North Queensland swimmers who wish to compete in the Paralympics.”
The August classification event is expected to open pathways for more young swimmers across the region to pursue competitive opportunities in para-sport.
Further details, including the location of the classification event, are yet to be confirmed.
