Magpie geese go to eggs-tremes

ONE might well expect Habitat Wildlife in Port Douglas or Hartley’s at Wangetti to be the likely locations for a story involving magpie geese and their soon-to-be-newborns.

Surprisingly, however, on this occasion it is in the entrance to the busy foyer at the Ramada Resort in Port Douglas.

Nests were made a few weeks ago, followed by eggs being laid. Onlookers initially counted four eggs, but this now seems to have increased to about 10.

Resort resident Herb Taylor has been keeping an eye on proceedings, together with holidaymakers and fascinated staff members.

“The magpie geese have put on a great display of nature,” Mr Taylor said

“A team of four geese are taking care of mum and the eggs,” he said. “I would expect in the next few days to see the bubbies come through. We will, no doubt, see them wandering through the resort when they get stronger.”
