Macca’s helping Tobias

WHEN their son Tobias was just four and a half months old, Katie (surname withheld) and her family’s lives were turned upside down.

Tobias contracted meningococcal disease, forcing the family to travel from their home on Cairns’ northern beaches to Townsville for urgent treatment.

Katie said the experience was devastating, though it was made bearable thanks to the support they received from the Ronald McDonald House in Townsville.

“It was a lifesaver, to be honest,” she said.

“Without them, we wouldn’t have been able to be by Tobias’s side. Just knowing that we had accommodation taken care of on the hospital site meant we didn’t have to think about any distance between us and Tobias. They literally help families keep close.”

Katie said the kindness of staff and volunteers provided moments of hope during a tough time.

“Probably every day,” she said. “I don’t think the staff and volunteers realise sometimes just how special a smile or a ‘Hi, how are you going’ can be on some of our toughest days as parents there. Some days, that was our saving grace.”

The family continues to rely on the charity as Tobias, now older, still travels to Townsville every few months for treatments and reviews with his surgical team.

“To know that we’re still supported by them, even on short trips or longer stays, means a lot,” Katie said.

“It’s not just a roof over your head – it’s meals, programs, tutoring for kids, even free haircuts. There’s a lot more to staying at the house than just a roof.”

Katie encouraged other families in similar situations not to hesitate in accepting help when it’s offered.

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help,” she said. “When you’re in an unfamiliar and unexpected situation and people offer assistance, say yes – it could be your saving grace.”

She also thanked those who support Ronald McDonald House Charities through donations and events, such as McHappy Day, on Saturday 15 November.

“I hope people understand just how much we appreciate those donations,” Katie said.
