Lots of laughs at 10 Hope St
AWARD-winning comedian, actor and writer Matt Okine will bring his new stand-up show No. 10 Hope St to The Hound Small Bar in Cairns on Sunday 16 August, with an additional 4.30pm performance added due to demand.
The 6.30pm show is almost sold out, according to publicist Lisa Bills, while tickets remain available for the newly added afternoon show.
No. 10 Hope St sees Okine return to his stand-up roots, exploring ageing, parenting, chasing the Australian dream, and his experience trying to buy a house as Cyclone Alfred approached Brisbane. The show is part of a tour that also includes Adelaide, the Sunshine Coast, Sydney, Hobart and Launceston.
Mr Okine said the Cairns performance would offer audiences an intimate live experience.
“Whereas stand-up is so immediate, you can look into the audience and lock eyes with people. You can see people laughing. You can chat to them afterwards,” he said.
“And like, in a room like Hound Bar, which I’m doing, you know, it’s really intimate, and things happen that are unexpected and unplanned and will never happen again, and that’s the exciting thing for me.”
Mr Okine said he particularly enjoyed taking his comedy beyond capital cities.
“I want people to not have to travel, so I’m trying my best to get out and about,” he said.
“I want people to be able to stay home because I know what it’s like when you’ve got kids and a family.”
Mr Okine has also starred in and executive produced the ABC reboot of Mother and Son, and hosts the All Day Breakfast podcast with Alex Dyson. His career includes an ARIA award for best comedy release and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival director’s choice award.
He said returning to stand-up had allowed him to reconnect directly with audiences after working in television, radio and podcasts.
The added 4.30pm Cairns session reflects demand for the show, with the event listing confirming the encore performance and tickets priced at $30.
