Library shuts for upgrade
SMITHFIELD Library is to close for eight months while it undergoes a costly upgrade.

The major renovation project is set to begin on September 1 to transform the existing space into a modern, welcoming and accessible hub for learning, creativity and community connection.
With a strong focus on flexibility and functionality, the renovations will deliver enhanced facilities, new technology and dedicated areas for programs that support digital literacy and lifelong learning.
The cost of the project is unknown as it is currently out to market.
A council spokeswoman said the council would provide a detailed update, including budget information, once the tender process was completed and a contractor was appointed.
Mayor Amy Eden said libraries were more than just books – “they’re places of connection, imagination and growth”.
“This renovation is about creating a dynamic space that reflects the evolving needs of our community and sets the standard for what a modern library can offer,” she said.
Cr Rhonda Coghlan (Div. 8) said the improvements would ensure the library could continue to service the community.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work towards a stronger future for our libraries and encourage residents to explore other libraries in the region,” she said. The library will close its doors from September 1, 2025, with a planned reopening May 1, 2026. During this time the library collection, public computers, Wi-Fi, programs and study spaces will be temporarily unavailable at the Smithfield location. Patrons can continue to access full services at any of the seven other Cairns Libraries branches
Smithfield Library staff will be redeployed to other branches. A 24/7 external book return bin will be installed at a nearby location, which will be announced close to the temporary closure to allow for easy item returns.
