Club president Jess Mulla said Mr Hurney’s signing reflected the club’s focus on developing youth players.

“We had a great season last year. He’s dedicated. He’s got a dream forecast, where he wants the boys to be and we’ve got a good youth development squad,” Mr Mulla said.

Mr Mulla said that Mr Hurney’s appointment was part of a broader three-year strategy to integrate young talent into the senior teams.

“There are two or three boys who play prems this year and there’ll be a few more that we’re going to introduce into the premier men’s team next season and into reserve,” he said.

Jimmy Leporati was selected to lead the under-23 squad because of his extensive coaching experience.

“Jimmy’s been involved in football for a long time. He’s been with Edge Hill and Stratford, and he’s been assistant coach and coach of the younger age groups in the past,” Mr Mulla said.

The club plans to strengthen the pathway between youth and senior teams by conducting joint training sessions.

“We’re going to train the boys all together and then all the individual coaches will take their players, do their training sessions and set up for the weekend.

“Basically, we all train on that first day of the week, on Tuesday, with all the grades, and then we’re split up on Thursday, so we’re playing the same style of football,” Mr Mulla said.

Preseason training begins on 4 December.
