Cairns Mayor Amy Eden joined FNQ Legacy representatives at 60-80 Cheviot Street, Smithfield last week to mark the agreement, which will pave the way for a permanent support facility for veterans' families.

The proposed Legacy House will provide emergency accommodation, crisis support, wellbeing programs and opportunities for community connection under one roof.

The project aims to support families across Far North Queensland, which is home to more than 11,000 veterans.

FNQ Legacy executive officer Rebecca Milliner said the lease signing marked an important milestone, bringing the project closer to reality.

“Standing on this land, Legacy House stops being an idea and starts becoming real. Behind every brick is a veteran's family who will walk through that door and know they are not alone,” she said.

Council has provided the land for the development and the Queensland Government has committed $1 million to the project.

However, FNQ Legacy is seeking an additional $1m in community contributions to help fund construction.

The organisation is calling on businesses, families and supporters across Far North Queensland to contribute to the development.

Supporters can participate in the organisation's ‘Buy a Brick for the Build’ campaign, donate, or explore business partnership opportunities. Donations of $2 or more are tax-deductible.

FNQ Legacy director Chris Bird and events officer Bec Dent were also among the representatives at the lease signing.

The proposed facility is intended to provide a central location for veterans' families to access practical assistance, emergency accommodation and ongoing support.

With the land lease now signed, FNQ Legacy's focus will shift to raising the additional $1m needed to deliver the project, with community and business contributions playing a key role in its future.
