Road closures due to wild weather

Multiple Cairns suburbs have lost power and various road closures are in effect due to fallen power lines, trees and more as pre-cyclone wild weather lashes the region.

Just after 11am, the Department of Transport and Main Roads declared Sheridan Street (Captain Cook Highway) closed to all traffic in both directions, but it has since been reopened.

The Gillies Range Road is still closed and the Bruce Highway is closed to all traffic at Bellenden Ker, due to multiple incidents related to the stormy weather, as of noon.

Bentley Park, Edmonton and Gordonvale are experiencing power outages due to the fallen power lines as well as multiple suburbs across the Cassowary Coast and Tablelands.

Residents asked to bring bins in from kerbside

Residents who have kerbside collection due to today are being asked to bring their bins in and they will be collected later in the week.

Due to the weather conditions bins are toppling over and waste is being spilt into the gutters.

Residents who do not have their bin collected can contact Council later in the week to organise collection.

Works to repair sinkhole in Westcourt

Motorists are being advised to avoid the intersection of Hannam and Earl streets in Westcourt.

Council is currently working to repair a sinkhole as a result of a burst water main.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area if possible as there will be disruptions to traffic – traffic control and detours are in place.

Cairns Regional Council apologises for any inconvenience caused and appreciates the patience and cooperation of road users while these repairs are undertaken.
