The grants are part of the Australian Government’s Regional Airports Program where 89 regional airports received a total of $30 million in funding in the Round 2 allocation.

Atherton, Innisfail, Charters Towers and Bowen all received funding for lighting, airstrip or fencing upgrades.

North Queensland-based Senator and Special Envoy for Northern Australia, Susan McDonald, welcomed the funding and urged local councils to apply for future rounds.

“Having access to safer airfields will encourage the growth of regional aviation which is so import for North Queenslanders who need to travel long distances, move people and freight when roads are cut, or to spray our main cash crops such as bananas and cane,” she said.

Mundoo airport in Innisfail will receive $170,000 for upgrades to fencing, whilst Atherton received $48,000 for restoration works to the runway as well as replacement of markets and navigational aids.
