Douglas Shire Council has completed a raft of upgrades and repairs at the popular site just in time for the tropical summer heat.

The upgrades also include an all abilities building entry access ramp, upgraded roofing, automated shade sails, new seating, repair of pool tiles and reseal works, upgrades to BBQ area and concrete paths.

In addition, Council worked with local swimming club Mossman Meteors to install new diving blocks at the eastern end of the pool.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr encouraged the community to check out the upgraded facility next week.

“The team has done a fantastic job to give the pool a nice makeover and address those lingering maintenance issues,” he said.

“We have same great new seats and barbecue areas to make Mossman Pool a place for families to go on the weekends, while we have also improved all abilities access into the pool to make the site more inclusive for our community.”

“The Mossman Pool is great for birthday parties where kids can burn off some steam playing on inflatable toys in the pool while parents supervise in a relaxing setting.”

The new outdoor lights allow Council to extend opening hours from 6am to 7pm on weekdays.

Unforeseen repairs to broken underground pipes allowed Council to eliminate potentially years of future water loss at the site.

The upgrades were 100 per cent funded through the Queensland Government’s COVID-19 Works For Queensland Program, while Council funded the repairs through its Capital Works program.

Council’s Sports and Recreation Development Officer Renee Ker said the community could expect exciting times ahead at the Mossman Pool.

“The new lights bring so much more opportunity in activating this very important community facility,” she said.

“Previously the pool had to close after sunset due to safety reasons and now with the new lights, there are so many more options available.

“Watch this space for underwater hockey and water polo open days, school holiday programs and aquafit classes. We look forward to the community getting on board with fitness and community activities in the pool.”

Council is now taking bookings for lane hire, birthday parties and even Christmas events.  To make the pool more inclusive, Council has also installed stairs and railings into the pool that will support the elderly and those with restricted movement access into the 50m pool.

Learn to Swim program details will be announced next week.
