The announcement comes less than a week after Facebook's heavy-handed removal of all media pages in Australia.

“The government has been advised by Facebook that it intends to restore Australian news pages in the coming days,” Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said in a statement.

Facebook has also confirmed the news in a statement issued through the Facebook Newsroom

"We’re pleased that we’ve been able to reach an agreement with the Australian government and appreciate the constructive discussions we’ve had with Treasurer Frydenberg and Minister Fletcher over the past week."

The pages will return in coming days as a result of on-going discussions between Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and Facebook's boss, Mark Zuckerber

The Australian government agreed to amend the media code as announced recently,

The Treasurer, Josh Frydenberg said: “The amendments will strengthen the hand of regional and small publishers in obtaining appropriate remuneration for the use of their content by the digital platforms.

“These amendments will provide further clarity to digital platforms and news media businesses about the way the Code is intended to operate and strengthen the framework for ensuring news media businesses are fairly remunerated.”

More to come.
