Kurrimine Beach locals, Deborah and John Nugent made a startling discovery on their beach yesterday morning during their regular early morning stroll. A strange looking marine creature was found washed up and just below the high water mark.

The three metre long creature had teeth and appeared to have hair and was decomposing.

“This was unlike anything we have seen before. We thought we had seen everything, but this was quite strange,” said Deborah Nugent.

Locals assisted to move the creature further up the beach away from the incoming tide to allow for identification.

Needing assistance in the identification of their creature from the deep, the couple contemplated reaching out to Cairns Aquarium as well as James Cook University, to assist with the correct identification of their find.

Late yesterday, a Cassowary Coast Regional Council worker arrived top bury the carcass. It was during that process the creature was identified as a decomposing shark. The ‘fibrous hairs’ were the result of decomposing cartilage.

Mystery solved, but the local community of Kurrimine Beach was abuzz for a period of time as the creature form the deep dominated the local conversation.
