COVID UPDATE: Great news for Cairns and Yarrabah

The stay-at-home restriction currently in place for Cairns and Yarrabah LGA’s will be eased this afternoon from 4pm.

However the Queensland Chief Health Office, Dr Janette Young has asked for some restrictions to remain.

The revised restrictions will remain through to Sunday August 22.

Restrictions include:

You must wear a face mask when outdoors.

You must wear a face mask at all times when indoors, including workplaces and schools, even when social distancing is possible, unless:

  • you are at your residence and there is no one else there except people you live with

  • you are eating or drinking

  • you are alone in an office or meeting room with the door closed

  • it is unsafe to wear a mask

Since Sunday more than 4476 people have tested in Cairns, with no additional positive cased identified.

The Premier described that at as tremendous news for Cairns. In the past 24 hours more than 15,000 vaccines were administered statewide by Queensland Health.

This short sharp lockdown has worked. The additional restrictions are designed to minimise the risk of community transmissions.

“I want to thank the Cairns community in advance, to do exactly what the 11 LGAs  are doing down here, and it will apply until Sunday August 22.”

“A week ago everyone was worried about where we would end up, and Queenslanders rose to the challenge and through your hard work we are in this fantastic situation,” the Premier stated.
