Chief Executive appointed to lead health service

The current acting Chief Executive of the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service, Tina Chinery, has been formally appointed to the role following a competitive selection process from a strong field of candidates.

The Chair of the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board, Clive Skarott, welcomed the appointment of Tina Chinery to the role. 

“Tina knows our region and our health services, having worked with the Health Service since 2016,” said Mr Skarott. 

“As the acting Chief Executive since March, Tina has led our local response to the COVID-19 pandemic, while concurrently continuing to ensure the delivery of exceptional healthcare to our community and progressing our strategic objectives. 

“She has expertly navigated this complex scenario with skill, confidence, empathy and courage and it is with great pleasure and pride that the Board welcomes her formal appointment to the role of Chief Executive,” he said. 

“Tina has also held executive level roles in Western Australia as well as strategic level roles including as a former Board member of the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service. 

“She is a highly impressive talent known for her collaborative leadership style and her passion for regional and rural healthcare. “As Chief Executive, Tina will be responsible for continuing to steer the Health Service towards its strategic objectives of becoming a university hospital,” Mr Skarott said. 

“She is passionate about improving health outcomes for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and is a committed member of our Cairns community.” 

The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service is a major contributor to the local economy with a budget of over $1 billion and it is the largest employer in the region with over 5000 full-time equivalent staff.
