Cassowary Coast Celebrates VP Day
Cassowary Coast Regional Council has shined a light on key locations throughout the region to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Victory in the Pacific, 15 August 2020.
A symbol of Council’s recognition of the significance of this event, red lights are being shone on the Innisfail Shire Hall, Cardwell Fire Tree and Tully Gumboot each evening this weekend.
Council’s efforts are joined by Mother of Good Counsel Parish in Innisfail who will ring their bells at 12noon, with all Cassowary Coast clergy, clubs and businesses invited to join the commemoration in whichever way they can.
Cassowary Coast Regional Councillor, Jeff Baines is a passionate advocate for the significance of the nation’s sacrifice of the great World Wars, and encourages all residents of the region to think of how they can remember this 75th anniversary.
“The significance of this anniversary is something which every person throughout the Cassowary Coast should take time to reflect on with family and friends,” said Cr. Baines.
“I’d like to ask all residents to consider taking part in two minutes’ silence tomorrow, and share its significance with children in particular.”
Cr. Baines also called on the community to virtually share their stories as a way of bringing our community together in remembrance.
“Please help us spread the word by committing to this important commemoration tomorrow and share your stories with us through our Facebook page.”
Council invites all who have a story about the significance of the Second World War and how they have honoured the 75th anniversary of its end to share with the community via Council’s Facebook page.
