Cairns GPs join the COVID vaccine rollout

Far North Queenslanders who are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine under Phase 1b of the national rollout will be able to head to a local GP next week to receive their vaccination.

There are 10 GP clinics* in Cairns who have signed up to administer the COVID-19 vaccine.

The number of local GP clinics able to administer the COVID-19 vaccine will increase over the coming weeks and months.

Each clinic will be provided with their allocated doses from Monday, 22 March 2021.

Each clinic has been allocated a weekly cap on the number of doses to be provided – this cap ranges from 50 – 400.

The tiered dose allocation model has been developed to maximise the number of practices coming on board each week, based on available vaccine supply.

This staged scale up will align with the supply of the locally produced AstraZeneca vaccine, and as more vaccine becomes available more services will come online.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said GPs will play a major role in ensuring all Far North Queenslanders who seek to be vaccinated have access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines.

“Vaccines are the game changer in our fight against the COVID-19 virus and I urge everyone in Far North Queensland to come forward and get vaccinated when they are able to,” Mr Entsch said.

“It will protect you, your family, and our community.

“Phase 1B includes vulnerable groups, such as older people and people with certain underlying medical conditions.

“No-one is better placed to support these people than our local general practices.

“It is clear from the positive response to the EOI that GPs are both prepared and committed to support the national COVID-19 vaccination effort, as well as their local communities.”

Mr Entsch said Far North Queenslanders eligible for Phase 1b will be able to find a local vaccination provider through the new national vaccination information and location service.

“Appointments on the service finder will increase as general practices establish their systems and vaccine supply,” he said.

“More appointments will become available as more clinics come on-board.

“People will still be able to book their vaccine appointments directly at a participating general practice – as they do now, for instance, to get a seasonal flu vaccine.”
