Police will allege a 12-year-old boy was at a City shopping centre at around 3.15pm when he was approached by two boys who were not known to him. One of the boys made a verbal demand for his shoes.

The 12-year-old walked a short distance away before again being told to hand over his shoes. The alleged offender then lifted his shirt to show the victim a screwdriver tucked into his waistband and allegedly made a verbal threat to stab him.

The victim complied with the demands, removing his shoes and handing them to the armed offender who then ran off in company with the second youth. The victim was not physically injured as a result of the offence.

Two senior students from the victim’s school witnessed the incident and approached him to check on his welfare. They then gave chase on foot before apprehending the offender and recovering the stolen shoes which they then returned to the victim. The offender subsequently fled the area and the incident was reported to police.

As a result of investigations, Cairns CPIU detectives arrested an 11-year-old boy in the CBD just after 10am yesterday. He was subsequently charged with one count of robbery whilst armed with an offensive instrument and is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Children's Court.
