NEW CASE: A further overseas-acquired case of COVID-19 has been identified as part of routine testing in a Cairns quarantine hotel.

The person is now in isolation in Cairns Hospital. There are currently six confirmed COVID-19 cases in Cairns Hospital - all were acquired overseas.

Most of these cases are linked to an outbreak of COVID-19 at the Ok Tedi mine in PNG.

Previous cases were confirmed on Sunday 28 February, Monday 1 March, Wednesday 3 March and Saturday 6 March.

All these cases were identified in quarantine hotel as part of the usual hotel testing program.

Tropical Public Health Services is following up close contacts (all are in hotel quarantine). This is contributing to a higher than usual demand on Cairns Hospital. Please be aware that if you go to the Emergency Department with a non-urgent condition, you may be asked to wait.

Emergency care will always be prioritised.
