24-year-old woman arrested

Yesterday, officers from the Cairns Property Crime Squad arrested a 24-year-old Cairns woman following an ongoing investigation into the stealing and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

During the early hours of July 31, police will allege forced entry was made to a Grafton Street home and a vehicle stolen.

At 12.55pm on the same day, police observed the vehicle on Swallow Street, pulled in behind the vehicle before it allegedly reversed, collided with the police vehicle and drove off at speed.

It will be further alleged the vehicle was driven to Brinsmead where it collided with a cane train at the Loridan Drive railway crossing.

The female driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

At 2.20pm yesterday afternoon, police located the woman at Parramatta Park where she was arrested and charged with 10 offences including two counts each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, stealing, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and one count each of burglary, driving without a driver’s licence, evade police and failing to comply with requirement to stop a vehicle.

The woman was denied police bail and remanded in custody to appear at the Cairns Magistrates Court today.
