The tender was approved by the Douglas Shire Council at its meeting in late February for remediation work of the severe damage caused by Cyclone Jasper in 2023 in the Wujul Wujul Shire. The project is funded under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) 2023 program.

In speaking to the motion to approve, Cr Michael Rees said the tender could not come soon enough.

“This is still dragging on from the effects of Jasper and the subsequent rain event,” he said.

“There is temporary access in place. But I think we need to get back to where we were.

“This just proves every time, that cyclones are very expensive, nine-and-a-half million dollars for one landslide. That’s a lot of Lego lollies, but it’s got to be done.”

He said the funding from the DRFA, meant ratepayers would not be out of pocket and noted also that the tender was an example of councils working together.

“I think that our shire can be really proud with this one … that this is actually in Wujal Wujal Shire, so we’re actually supporting them.”
