The Queen’s 1954 visit brought pageantry and crowds.

From Olympic Torch Relay visits to infrastructure openings like the Esplanade Lagoon (2003), Cairns Performing Arts Centre (2018) and the redevelopment of Munro Martin Parklands landmark events have opened new chapters in the city’s story.

Cultural events, natural wonders and even eclipse viewings have drawn global attention.

These landmark events shape the city’s identity, blending civic pride with a sense of shared history.

Cairns to Herberton train line

OFFICIALLY opened on 10 October 1920, the Cairns to Herberton train line was regarded as an essential link for the hinterland town through the coastal port to southern markets.

The inaugural train departed Cairns to Atherton where it picked up a further 500 people before it travelled onwards to Herberton.

By the time it arrived there were over 1000 passengers.

A flame of hope: when the Olympic Torch came to town

PLANNING is already underway for the Summer Olympics 2032, but there was a time when Cairns was abuzz with Olympic runners as they ran through the heart of Cairns in 1956.

Excitement rippled through the crowd as Owen Berzinski lit the flame of Jim Vallely’s torch outside the Cairns Showgrounds and he powered off on his leg of the journey. Do you remember where you were back then?

The opening of Cairns City Council Chambers in 1930

THE Cairns City Council Chambers officially opened in 1930, marking an important step in the city’s growth.

Designed by Hill & Taylor and built by Alex McKenzie, the Abbott Street building became the centre of local government and civic life.

Recognised for its heritage value, it was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 1998.

Today, the former chambers continues to serve the community as the Cairns City Library.

100 years in style

IN 1976, Cairns marked its centenary with flair.

Celebrations included commemorative medals, badges, glassware, tea towels, booklets and even bottles of locally produced wine – famously not very good, as it was meant to be enjoyed immediately.

Signature events ranged from the Tommy McDonald Centenary Air Race to a vintage car rally, while 50 horse riders recreated the Royal Mail run from Thornborough to Cairns.

Author Dorothy Jones produced Trinity Phoenix at short notice – becoming the district’s most complete history for decades.

A major legacy project was the creation of Centenary Lakes, transforming swamp and mangroves into a scenic network of waterways.

Festivities culminated in a parade as part of the ‘Fun in the Sun’ program.
