A club statement said her appointment represented the next step in the club’s ongoing strategic evolution, as the board continued to diversify its leadership to better reflect the direction of the modern game.

“Her leadership aligns strongly with the Northern Pride’s commitment to growing women’s rugby league and the broader aspiration of seeing an NRLW team based in Cairns, supporting the North Queensland Cowboys’ vision for expansion into Far North Queensland,” it said.

“A respected figure in sports administration, Kym brings extensive experience and a proven track record of leadership, including her instrumental role in securing the Northern Pride’s successful entry into the BMD Premiership in 2025.

“Her passion and commitment to women’s sport and the development of rugby league in our region are well known and highly regarded.”

Ms McPhee-Smith said “it’s an incredible privilege to step into the role of chair(woman) for the Northern Pride. Terry has left an outstanding legacy and I am committed to building upon that strong foundation,”

“This is a pivotal time for the game, particularly with the rapid growth of women’s rugby league,” She said.
