Workcover Queensland assists injured employees return to a working environment by connecting them with a host organisation for a period of time.

In this case, Mr Villaflor was linked with Mossman Support Services for a couple of months and has found the experience a great morale booster.

He has already made a meaningful contribution to the community centre and has been actively involved in gardening, plus helping to maintain and refresh the centre’s outdoor spaces.

His efforts have made a noticeable difference to the presentation of the grounds ensuring they remain welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.

Mr Villaflor has also been supporting the community food rescue program, assisting with collecting, sorting and distributing food to guarantee it reaches those who need it most.

In addition, he has taken on a variety of handyman tasks around the centre, helping with maintenance jobs that keep the facilities safe, functional and running smoothly.

“I have really enjoyed my time volunteering at the community centre,” Mr Villaflor said.

“All the staff, volunteers and the locals have been very welcoming and it has been a good way to meet new people in the community,” he said.

“It was the perfect thing to get me out of the house and doing something productive.”

Mr Villaflor’s willingness to lend a hand wherever needed and his positive approach to each task have been greatly appreciated by both staff and visitors.

“His contribution over the past month has helped strengthen the day to-day operations of our centre and support the wider community,” said Mossman Support Service CEO Heather McGillivray-Taylor.

“Volunteering provides incredible opportunities for professional growth,” she said.

“In fact, some of our most dedicated employees began their journeys with us as volunteers. To be precise, five members of our team started out in volunteer roles.”
