Julie aims for fitness title
CAIRNS hairdresser and salon owner Julie Melvin is preparing to take on the FMG World Championships on the Gold Coast this Saturday 13 September, aiming to become the 45+ World Fitness Champion.

Her journey to the world stage has been anything but ordinary. After raising three children and addressing her osteopenia, Ms Melvin turned her focus to strength training and competition.
“After my first show, I absolutely loved the process ... the feeling stronger. My body had increased bone density ... I just found something I absolutely loved,” she said.
Her dedication extends beyond the gym. Ms Melvin balances early mornings of posing practice and two-hour workouts with running Kulur Co., her boutique salon in Edge Hill, alongside her daughter Alexis and a talented team of stylists.
“When purchasing this business and prepping for this comp, it certainly wasn’t easy,” she said.
“With the incredible support of my amazing partner Matt – my absolute rock – I truly couldn’t have done all of this without his continual love and support.”
Ms Melvin also credited her family for keeping her grounded and motivated.
“A big thank you to my three amazing children, Christian, Lleyton and Alexis, their partners and my stepchildren, Jack and Dominik, for their continual love and support. I love them so, so very much, and they truly are my driving force in everything I do in life,” she said.
Matt Krenske, a personal trainer, coach, sports nutritionist and chef, has guided her training and nutrition through multiple competition preps.
Together, they now mentor other women looking to step onto the fitness stage.
“He’s always had 100% belief that I had the genetics, the drive, the determination ... I just did it,” she said.
Her motivation goes beyond personal achievement. She hopes her story inspires women, especially over 40, to chase their goals.
