Jordan’s 24-hour 100km slog

CAIRNS athlete Jordan Hohns has pushed the limits of endurance, completing a gruelling 100km run along the Cairns Esplanade overnight earlier this month.

Setting off at 6pm on Monday 1 September, the 24-year-old ran through the night and crossed the finish line just after sunrise the next day.

Running without sleep and with only short breaks at a supply station every two hours, Mr Hohns said the final hours were the toughest.

“By 4.30am, the struggle was really setting in,” he said. “I’d already gone through hallucinations earlier in the night from the lack of sleep. At that point, it went from feeling like I had control to being out of control. I just kept telling myself, ‘I’ve done 80, I can do 20 more.’”

Jordan’s partner, Talia, supported him throughout the night with food, water and encouragement.

She even joined him on a bike for the final 5km as the sun rose. “When the sun was up, it brought me home,” he said.

What makes the feat remarkable is that Mr Hohns decided to take on the challenge at short notice. “I wanted it to be as random as possible to inspire others,” he explained.

“If you know you can do it, you can do it. Don’t overthink it, give it a go.”

He is no stranger to endurance events. At just 16, he was the youngest person to complete Mareeba’s Great Wheelbarrow Race, a 140km run over three days.
