The milestone event, returning to Tropical North Queensland in June, will also mark 15 years of Cairns Airport as title sponsor of the internationally recognised endurance triathlon races.

Athletes from 54 countries are expected to compete in either the Ironman or Ironman 70.3 triathlon events, reinforcing the race’s status as a major tourism and sporting drawcard for the region.

Since 2012, Cairns Airport Ironman Cairns has become a key fixture on the global Ironman calendar, attracting both professional and age-group competitors to Far North Queensland.

The Ironman Group Asia-Pacific regional director Leanna Ali said the anniversary highlighted the event’s growth and strong community support.

“There’s a real sense of excitement and pride as we approach the 15th anniversary of Cairns Airport Ironman Cairns,” she said.

“This event has grown into one of the most iconic races on the global Ironman circuit and reaching this milestone is a testament to the incredible support from athletes, the community and our partners,” she said.

“We’re particularly proud to celebrate 15 years with Cairns Airport as our title sponsor. Their ongoing commitment has been instrumental in helping us build and sustain this event into what it is today.”

Cairns Airport chief executive officer Richard Barker said the event delivered major economic benefits to the region each year.

“This showstopper event brings a significant boost in visitation to our region each year, with clear flow-on benefits for local operators, businesses and the broader Tropical North Queensland community,” he said.

“Cairns Airport’s enduring partnership with Ironman highlights the powerful role major events play in connecting people to our region and showcasing Cairns as a world-class destination for both competition and leisure.”

Cairns local Joe Pilat, who has competed in every edition of the event since 2012, said the race continued to draw strong support from the community.

“The reason I keep coming back to this race is that it’s a personal challenge, it’s local at my doorstep, well organised and allows my whole family to be a part of it,” he said.

Local businesses, volunteers and community groups are now preparing for what organisers expect will be one of the largest editions of the race to date, with continued investment planned in athlete experience and international engagement.
