Insects which surprise experts

The exhibition, currently showing in Tank 4, features detailed photographs of insects found in the Mt Whitfield area and has already drawn strong public interest. Mr Kloss said the response so far had been encouraging, particularly from families.

“I think that was my purpose in the first place, was actually to put on a display to motivate kids, but also adults as well, to get out and have a look in their environment and see what’s there,” he said.

Mr Kloss said even after a lifetime of photographing wildlife, the diversity of insect life in the tropics continued to surprise him.

“It doesn’t matter how much you find out about what’s in the environment. There’s always something that comes along that you haven’t seen before,” he said.

“The sheer variety that we’ve got here in the tropics is absolutely mind-boggling when you look closely. There’s a treasure trove of little animals there that people basically walk straight past most of the time.”

The insect talks are free, with no bookings required, and are scheduled for Saturday 10 January and Saturday 17 January, all starting at 10.30am and running for one hour.

The exhibition is open daily until mid-January.
