Iconic harvest festival shines brightly on cue
A FEW passing showers failed to dampen the spirits of thousands who flooded into Babinda last Saturday to celebrate the annual Babinda Harvest Festival in grand country style.
While dark clouds occasionally threatened over Mount Bartle Frere, the rain cleared right on cue for the festival’s signature 2pm grand parade along Munro Street.
Spectators lined the footpaths several deep in some spots as a vibrant procession of float participants brought this year’s ‘Pages come to life’ storybook theme to reality.
Joining the colourful community floats was an impressive fleet of vintage cars and classic tractors joining newer models as they rumbled down the main street to the delight of enthusiasts young and old.
Festival president Courtney Sheehan praised the incredible energy of the parade and the overall turnout, noting that the community’s enthusiastic support made all the hard work behind the scenes worthwhile.
“The parade was bright, colourful and brought great energy to the start of the festival. There were lots of vintage tractors and cars in the parade,” Ms Sheehan said.
“The atmosphere was both energetic and laid back and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, except the few showers of rain, she said.
“The festival takes a lot of our time to bring together and it’s seeing the success of the festival and the joy on people’s faces, the positive comments, the friendships and fun, that makes it all worthwhile.”
Following the parade, crowds migrated to the showgrounds at Bill Wakeham Park, where the afternoon and evening program kicked into high gear.
Families made a beeline for the extensive range of kids’ rides, sideshow alley games and community market stalls, while younger festival-goers eagerly awaited the famous giant lolly drop.
Over at the arena, engine roars and cheers filled the air as the tractor pull delivered high-octane excitement.
A central highlight of the day was the crowning of the 2026 Harvest Festival ‘royalty’, marking the culmination of months of hard work by five dedicated local entrants.
Festival secretary Carly Francis paid tribute to the young women who represented the community through various fundraising events and quests throughout the lead-up.
“The princesses were all outstanding through the entire quest and we are extremely proud of them all,” Ms Francis said.
“Congratulations to our Queen – Tiahna Aldred and our Miss Community Spirit – Hailey Sheehan.”
