Djawarray (Bertie Riley) was named a finalist in the Queensland Music Awards for his song ‘Wulman Wulman’ in the world music category before going on to win.

He was given a hero’s welcome at Cairns Airport when he returned last Sunday.

His dance group, the Mayi Wunba dancers, came together to honour him in a way that was described as “raw, proud and deeply connected”.

On Facebook Djawarray said it was “a beautiful homecoming”.

“Thank you to #mayiwunba my family and friends for welcoming me home from the #qldmusicawards with so much love” he said.

“How fortunate I am to belong to such a deadly family and community.

“Thank you all for the effort and strength you bought to Cairns Airport this morning.”

The earlier nomination had already been described as “a really proud moment for Kuranda and the wider Cairns community, with culture, language and music from our region being recognised on a state stage,” said Rennae Brant from Which-Way Cultural and Community Care Inc.

Djawarray’s track Wulman Wulman was shortlisted in the world music category, highlighting local Indigenous culture and language through music.

Which Way Cultural and Community Care, a Far North Queensland-based organisation, said the recognition reflected the strength of cultural expression emerging from the region.

The win places a spotlight on Kuranda and the broader Cairns area, showcasing local talent at a statewide level through one of Queensland’s most prominent music awards programs.

The Queensland Music Awards recognise outstanding musical achievement across a range of genres and celebrate artists from across the state.

Djawarray’s success follows his initial selection as a finalist announced earlier this year, with community members expressing pride in seeing local stories and language represented.

The result is expected to further raise the artist’s profile and open opportunities for future performances and recognition.
