Historic match between Rangers and Magic tomorrow
CAIRNS-based soccer team Marlin Coast Rangers will contest the most important match in its proud 76-year history when the club hosts the FQPL Champions League State Final at Pennell Field, Trinity Beach tomorrow (Saturday 27 September).

Kicking off at 12pm, the Far North and Gulf League champions will take on FQPL 1 champions Magic United, a club fresh from winning the league and grand final double and securing promotion to NPL Queensland for 2026.
No regional team has ever defeated a south-east Queensland powerhouse to claim this prestigious title – but MCR will be looking to rewrite history on their home ground.
“This is the biggest match in our history,” said Marlin Coast head coach Crios O’Hare.
“To bring a state final of this magnitude to Pennell Field is something special. Not only are we representing our club, but also FNQ football as a whole, and we are hoping the football community gets behind us to make it a great occasion,” he said
The final will be a family-friendly event with the club canteen and bar open, live round announcements and junior activities at halftime.
Entry is free for all MCR players, supporters and families wearing MCR shirts or supporter gear, with gates opening from 11am.
Supporters are encouraged to wear their club colours, be loud and help create an unforgettable atmosphere.
“We are proud be in the final and to welcome another NPL side to Pennell Field,” Mr O’Hare said.
“We’re inviting everyone – football fans or not – to come down, enjoy a great day out, and be part of history in the making,” he said.
This will be the second NPL Queensland side Marlin Coast Rangers have faced this season, after they were narrowly beaten 3-2 after extra-time by Peninsula Power in the Australia Cup in June.
