Built in 1929, the current Butler’s Building has stood in Norman Street for almost a century.

One of the owners, Cameron Berkman, said the renewal “reflected the long-term commitment of the building’s owners – two Sydney-based families – to preserving the historic property and supporting the future of the Gordonvale town centre”.

“The works build on maintenance and restoration work completed in recent years, ensuring the building remains an attractive home for local businesses and a focal point for the community,” he said.

Mayor Amy Eden said Butler’s Building had been part of the Gordonvale streetscape since 1929 – and there “is something pretty special about seeing a building approaching its centenary given a new lease on life while retaining the character that makes it so recognisable”.

“This is private investment in the heart of Gordonvale. The owners have invested in the building, local businesses are operating from it and that activity contributes to a vibrant and attractive town centre,” she said.

“Gordonvale is growing, but growth doesn’t mean losing the things that give a place its identity.

“Investment has a ripple effect. When one property owner backs a town, presents their property beautifully and breathes new life into an old building, it encourages others to do the same.

“I hope this inspires more investment, more pride in how properties are presented and continued confidence in the future of Gordonvale.”

To mark the completion of the refurbishment, the owners hosted a community relaunch event in conjunction with the Gordonvale Cottage Markets last Saturday. The current tenants of the building – Fitness 360, Mama Kaz Cookies, GoodBoys Whole Foods and the Gordonvale Laundry – gave away free samples and invited the public to visit their stores.

Original architectural features, including its distinctive jettied verandas, cantilevered awning, decorative trim and circular balcony details, have been retained as part of the restoration.

The refurbishment honours the building’s heritage character while ensuring it remains a vibrant and functional centre for local businesses and community activity.
