Gym aims to be powerhouse
WORLD Gym Cairns has begun a major three-stage refit and expansion, starting with a 900sqm extension to meet growing demand and expand its range of facilities.

Regional manager Zac Ross said the decision to invest now followed a decade of steady growth.
“We’ve been here 10 years and we’ve grown and grown over the years. We’re quite a popular gym,” Mr Ross said.
“We believe we can’t sit here and keep doing the same thing and expect to keep clients happy. We’ve been here for 10 years, we want to be here for another 10 years and we want to evolve. We want to keep getting better.”
Stage one includes new bathrooms, a new recovery centre, an expanded lower body zone and a new booty boulevard, along with upgraded sound and lighting and new equipment already arriving on site.
Mr Ross said the recovery centre would be a new offering for the gym, integrating services usually found outside traditional gym spaces.
“That’ll be something unique for us. We’ve incorporated all into one,” he said.
“We’ll have ice baths, magnesium pool, infrared sauna, traditional steam stone sauna and also a red-light therapy bed as well.”

He said the recovery centre would be offered as a membership add-on, with details to be announced soon. The plan is for it to open “at the end of this month, start of February”.
Regular member Kingston Kris, who trains at the gym five times a week, said the upgrade was a positive step for members.
“For starters, the staff are nice and all of the other members are also good here,’ he said.
“It’s a really good environment to come and work out,” he said.
Mr Kris said the refit would help accommodate more members.
“Makes the gym bigger now, so more people can come and enjoy the extra extension,” he said.
Stage two of the project will focus on revamping the free weights zone, with new upper-body equipment, fresh flooring, updated signage and a new comfort zone with the latest circuit range.
Stage three will deliver a refreshed group fitness studio and a new reformer pilates studio offering live and virtual classes.
Mr Ross said the gym would remain open throughout construction, with most work completed behind the scenes to minimise disruption.
“We just communicated with our members to the best of our ability and put in after-hours to limit the impact as much as possible,” he said.
